But if you want songs with actual morals and depth, then you're better off replaying "The Long Road." On the topic of sex-oriented songs, there's also "Next Go Round" ("I wanna go so long your parents think you died /They're gonna call the cops the CIA and then the FBI ") and S.E.X ("Yes sex is always the answer/It's never a question/Cause the answer's yes/Oh the answer's yes.")ĭark Horse wraps up with "This Afternoon," which involves Kroger and friends sitting around on the couch smoking pot, drinking beer and generally being lazy while his landlord threatens to kick him out, giving the album as tepid a finale as it had a beginning.īottom line: if you want to spend the money buying an album chock-full of songs revolving around alcohol, various drugs and having sex, then by all means, do so. Why Nickelback feels the need to fill half an album with songs turning girls into hookers or players is beyond me. One of the most disappointing songs, in my opinion, is "Shakin' Hands," the essence of which boils down to: Girl wants to get famous fast, becomes prostitute, DOES get famous. Kroger shares the horror of watching his friend steal, rob and threaten to get the money to feed his hunger, adding, "But I can still remember what his face looked like/When I found him in an alley in the middle of the night." Powerful lyrics depict a man falling to pieces thanks to a drug addiction.

NEW NICKELBACK ALBUM DARK HORSE FULL
"Just To Get High," while a very good song, seems a tad out of place in this compilation full of tracks glorifying smoking weed and drinking. "I'd Come For You" and "Never Gonna Be Left Alone" are also more reminiscent of good ol' "Far Away" and "Someday." Most people listening to "Dark Horse" will instantly recognize "Gotta Be Somebody." The only song on the album to be released on the radio thus far, it sounds much more like the Nickelback we're used to, with dreamy instrumentals backing up Kroger as he yearns to find the one person to spend forever with him. My personal favorite song on "Dark Horse" is Track 2, "Burn It to the Ground." The first of many "Let's get drunk and run wild" songs to come, the pulsating, driving beat gets your head bopping in seconds, regardless of the rather crude lyrics.
NEW NICKELBACK ALBUM DARK HORSE SKIN
Though the song goes no deeper than describing a much-desired hottie teasing all the boys on the dance floor, there are some touches of the group's usual lyrical poetry ("Bettin' that her skin smells better/Than the scent of every flower in the desert.") Almost every song on "Dark Horse" centered on either sex, drugs, drinking or some combination of the three.įirst up on the track list is "Something In Your Mouth." Much more hard-rock sounding than their typical works, it gets the album off to a lukewarm start.

But I was immensely disappointed with my favorite band from track 1. One of the best examples of this is last year's hit single "If Everyone Cared," in which Kroger sings, "If everyone cared and nobody cried/If everyone loved and nobody lied/If everyone shared and swallowed their pride/Then we'd see the day when nobody died." With this in mind, when I popped its latest album, "Dark Horse" into my computer, I expected to hear a collection of new songs of their usual quality. Immensely popular Canadian rock band Nickelback, fronted by the raspy-yet-powerful vocals of Chad Kroger, is probably best known for its deep, meaningful song lyrics.
